DataFlex Content Manager 4.5 features and other improvements

Generate a Public URL for files

We’ve added an option that allows you to generate a public URL for your files. This makes it easy to share files with your customers. DataFlex Content Manager rewrites URL’s from http://yourdomain.com/Studio/Include/DataFlexCMFileStreaming.asp?FileId=68 to http://www.yourdomain.com/company-logo.png-f68. Simply easier to remember!

Auto updated Sitemap.xml and robots.txt

Auto update comes in handy when you change your website pages often. No more need for updating manually because DataFlex Content Manager handles this for you. Don’t want DataFlex Content Manager to do this automatically? Don’t worry, you can turn it off. Simply go to Control panel > Settings.

This Sitemap.xml and robots.txt settings have been moved from the top-right to the Settings page. Why? That is because you only need to switch the auto-update on/off the first time. From the Settings page you can also let the robots.txt include a reference to your sitemap. This comes in handy if you want to tell Google the exact paths of your pages.

When you turn Sitemap.xml off, DataFlex Content Manager will automatically delete your sitemap.xml from the website and the reference from robots.txt.

Increased length for filenames, pages, categories, and folders

We’ve increased the maximum number of characters from 30 to 200. This gives you the opportunity to create filenames beyond 30 characters when you’re dealing with long names like for example ‘Data Access Worldwide will release a new version of DataFlex Content Manager soon!’. Previously, this wouldn’t have been possible.

New status bar

We decided to add a status bar which tells you how many files there are and how many you’ve selected. It also tells you other information for instance whether you have filters active.

Import & Export Website Parameters

Do you maintain large websites or do you have many custom parameters set for your multi lingual website? Of course you don’t want to add them all over again because you’ve decided to create a complete new website for your client. Or if you have the same parameters set every time for different projects, then export them and import into your new website Studio. Simply import and export your website Parameters to a CSV file.

If you have a long list of parameters and prefer to add/edit in Excel; now you can. It can be done quicker off-line, especially when it comes to translations for multi-lingual websites. Or send the CSV file to an agency, to have the translation done for you.

Import & Export users

Are you working with a team of which every member needs access to the same project? Now you can import and export Studio users. This can be also used to transfer users from one website to another.

Send e-mails to active Studio users

Maintaining a client’s website and need to close down the Studio for a while? Notify the users via sending an email from within DataFlex Content Manager. Go to Control Panel > Users.

Set column details

Per user you can set your own display information by adding or hiding the column details you want. As a developer, you want to see as much as possible but your client only wants to see what’s relevant to him. Personalize your view now! We’ve also extended the column details with ‘Label’, ‘Created on’, ‘Created by’.

Added informational icons

Overwritten a default Website Parameter or assigned a label? Never need to guess anymore because DataFlex Content Manager displays an icon to tell you.

Multi-item page in Multi-item page

Frustrations about not being able to create a multi-item page within a multi-item page are over. This comes in handy if you don’t always want or need an ‘overview’ page or having problems making yDataFlex Content Managerour breadcrumb make sense. Simply create a ‘Multi-item page within Multi-item page’ – without being limited to how many levels deep you can go.

Change Document Structure

Added a lot of document structure items but forgot that it needs to be a multi-item page? Make sure its not in use and switch from a Document to Container and vice versa without having to do all your hard work over again.

User right ‘Manage Page Label’

Don’t want to bother your clients with the option ‘Label’ then just don’t show it to them. This also saves you the risk of having your client removing a page label resulting in broken website functionality.

You can assign the right ‘Manage Page Label’ to a user if you want them to edit and remove labels. If you have assigned this right then DataFlex Content Manager shows you an icon telling you that a page or category contains a label.

User right ‘Delete Page With Label’

There’s a new User right called ‘Delete Page With Label’ which allows a user to delete a page with its label or not. Whether a user was granted this right or not, DataFlex Content Manager will always notify you when a page has a label set.

Exclude website parameters

A lot of parameters that weren’t interesting for you or your client can now be hidden. If you don’t use the webshop or searchmodule then hide these parameters which will put your focus on the items that are relevant to you. It makes the screen easier to read - thus easier to manage.

ExcludeItem parameter

If you have system pages or pages you don’t want to expose, then exclude it from the search results page, sitemap.xml and sitemap.asp all at once.

Extended the Website Parameters Sub-type

We’ve extended the subtypes of the Website Parameters with:

Scan for unused items

Do you know how many dead links there are in websites around the world? How often links get broken by disabling/removing pages from publication? Or page relocated? There are crawlers from third parties that can help to find dead links but now DataFlex Content Manager has its own crawler… an unused items report feature that creates a report and scans for internal unused pages, products or files based on different criteria.

You can run the report on demand but since crawling a large DataFlex Content Manager website (and you have large websites, right?) we have made crawling possible in the background. Of course configurable. As soon as you save a page, a request to scan is put in a queue. If the queue’s time-out is hit the scanning starts. The time-out can be shifted by saving (or deleting) another page so you won’t have many scans in the background. Scanning is on a user-by-user basis since the authorization feature added in version 4.4. Items that you don’t have access to, will not be made visible.

Rename files during upload

While uploading file(s) you can rename the filename immediately before actual uploading the file(s). This is great when you have a webshop and need your filenames to be logical for SEO.

Website Parameter ItemsPerPage

Added new Website Parameter ‘ItemsPerPage’ which can be used for global pagination and gives you the option to set e.g 2 items per page for your news template and 8 items per page for your search results.

Extended Document Structure type

Pagination module

A pagination feature can be added to different templates and is easily customizable by changing the Website parameters ‘PaginationNumbersPerPage’ and ‘ItemsPerPage’. Pagination can be used on shop, search results, news, blog, comments, etc.

Extended page link type ‘Internal link’

This feature is a great addition for your website whith regards to SEO. You might need multiple places that link to a page but you don’t want to deal with duplicate content. This replaces the page sharing that created new url’s to the same page, thus content duplication, which negatively impacts SEO.

Check for URL Rewrite module

We want you to use user-friendly URL’s by using the URL rewrite module. DataFlex Content Manager makes it easier for you to work with this module and checks whether the module is installed on your server or not.

Added and Extended ASP templates
